Watauga Orthopaedics was founded in 1950 by Dr. Howell Sherrod, with a clear vision of providing specialized orthopedic care to patients in Northeast Tennessee and the surrounding region. For more than 75 years, we have built upon Dr. Sherrod’s legacy, becoming the region's largest and most experienced team of orthopedic specialists. As a physician-owned and independent practice, every decision we make begins and ends with what is best for our patients and the communities we serve.

Over the last decade, we have expanded our services to encompass a comprehensive musculoskeletal continuum, including total joint replacement; arthroscopy; sports medicine; fracture care; reconstructive hip, knee, foot and ankle surgery; hand surgery; spine surgery; neuromusculoskeletal care; physical medicine and rehabilitation; electrodiagnostics; and community outreach services.

In recent years, the practice has developed a reputation for understanding and responding to the unique needs of the injured worker and the employer. Watauga Orthopaedics places an emphasis on access to care, timely and complete communication, and consistent cost-effective treatment plans and protocols for all injured workers.

Advancing Care Through Innovation

In 2023, we expanded our commitment to accessible, high-quality care with the opening of the Watauga Orthopaedics' Center for Advanced Bone and Joint Surgery, a state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center designed for comfort, quality, and affordability.

We are also proud to be one of only 51 centers nationwide and just two in Tennessee to earn the AAAHC Advanced Orthopaedic Certification for Total Joint Replacement, a recognition of our dedication to excellence, safety, and exceptional patient outcomes.
