After completing a master’s degree at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Dr. Joseph Hurst began his professional career as a physician assistant with Lakeshore Bone and Joint Institute in Chesterton, Indiana. He later earned his medical degree from Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in Downers Grove, Illinois, and completed his orthopedic residency through East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine.
As a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Hurst provides general orthopedic care with a focus on joint replacement and sports medicine. His surgical expertise includes direct anterior muscle-sparing total hip replacement, subvastus total knee arthroplasty designed to preserve the quadriceps tendon and support recovery, total shoulder replacement, and reverse total shoulder replacement. He works closely with each patient to develop a treatment plan tailored to their individual needs, goals, and lifestyle.
Dr. Hurst was an active leader in student organizations throughout his academic career. Since completing medical school, he has served on several committees through Holston Valley Medical Center and the Tennessee Osteopathic Medical Education Consortium. He is also dedicated to improving the lives of area youth through sports medicine and has served as a volunteer coach for football, baseball, and wrestling.
During his free time, Dr. Hurst enjoys spending time with his family, exercising, and music.
