Pediatric Orthopedics: What Do These Doctors Treat, and How Can They Help?

August 25, 2017

Pediatric Orthopedics

If your child has any type of orthopedic problem, you want him or her to receive the very best, most advanced care possible. Additionally, you’ll want a team of experts who are compassionate and view each one of their young patients as unique. And most importantly, you deserve a doctor who is understanding and responsive to the concerns of the child’s parents.

As a parent, there is nothing worse than seeing your child in pain. However, as they grow from children to an adult, their growing bodies and bones sometimes just don’t work well together. From major bumps, broken bones, and even more serious skeletal issues, you want your child to be treated with quality care by a capable team, and specifically a doctor who is specialized in working with children.

If your pediatrician suggests that your child see a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, you can be assured that they have the widest range of treatment options, the most extensive/comprehensive training, expertise in dealing with children, and in treating children’s orthopedic disorders.

This isn’t just because you want a doctor that talks to or handles children well, you need a doctor who understands the intricacies of children in their different developmental stages. For children whose bones are still growing, it is especially important they receive care from a trained orthopedic specialist, and not an emergency room doctor or general surgeon at a typical walk-in-clinic or urgent care.

If your child has musculoskeletal (bone) problems, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon has the experience and qualifications to treat your child. Pediatric orthopedic surgeons are renowned for their specialized expertise in a broad spectrum of congenital, developmental, and traumatic disorders affecting bones, soft tissue, joints, and the neuromuscular system in babies, children, and adolescents.

Pediatric Orthopedic surgeons treat, and manage, children’s musculoskeletal problems, including:

  • Limb and spine deformities (such as club foot, scoliosis)
  • Gait abnormalities (limping)
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Broken bones

Children cannot always say what is bothering them, cannot easily answer medical questions, and are not always able to be patient and cooperative during a medical examination. Pediatric orthopedic surgeons know how to examine and treat children in a way that makes them relaxed and cooperative.

Pediatric orthopedic surgeons often use equipment specially designed for children. Most pediatric offices are arranged and decorated with children in mind. This includes the examination rooms and waiting rooms, which may have toys, videos, and reading material for children. This helps create a comfortable and nonthreatening environment for your child.

At Watauga Orthopaedics, we understand how to address the unique concerns of pediatric orthopedic injuries. We treat a wide range of pediatric orthopedic conditions, from diagnosis to rehabilitation.

To schedule an appointment with one of our pediatric orthopedists, call Watauga Othopaedics at (423) 282-9011 to request an appointment, or request one online by logging into our patient portal.
